The essential answer
Energy density measures stored or delivered energy per specified mass or volume. Power density measures delivery rate per specified mass or volume. The distinction resembles distance and speed: neither determines the other without additional information. A device can provide a brief strong pulse yet little total energy, or hold considerable energy while delivering it slowly. Comparisons require the same normalization boundary, operating conditions, and useful cutoff. Electrode-only values and complete-system values answer different engineering questions and should be labeled separately.
How to reason about it
Start with the application demand rather than a headline density. Specify the power needed, the time it must persist, and the minimum usable terminal condition. Then define what is counted in mass or volume: active material, electrodes, electrolyte, packaging, control electronics, thermal hardware, or the assembled system. A mass-specific metric is commonly called specific energy or specific power; volumetric density should be identified with volume units. The ratio of energy to power has time units, but it is only a nominal duration if both quantities describe compatible operating conditions. High-rate operation can change usable energy, so dividing a low-rate capacity by an unrelated peak rating can be misleading. A useful comparison presents a pair of values at a stated discharge profile, followed by the assumptions needed to scale them to the application.

An example to work through
Assume two hypothetical complete modules each have a mass of 2 kg. Module A delivers 20 Wh before its specified cutoff and supports a constant 10 W over that discharge, giving 10 Wh/kg, 5 W/kg, and a two-hour duration. Module B delivers 4 Wh at a constant 40 W, giving 2 Wh/kg, 20 W/kg, and 0.1 hour, or six minutes. Ignore aging and conversion loss for this example. Module B has the greater power per mass but the smaller energy per mass; the preferred choice depends on the required task.
Where interpretation fails
The word “density” can conceal an inconsistent denominator. A cell-level mass, an active-material mass, and a packaged-system mass are not interchangeable. Peak power at one temperature also should not be combined with capacity obtained at a different rate to imply a validated operating duration.
The next decision
Compare energy and power together, with explicit units and boundaries. For a pulse application, prioritize pulse duration and recovery. For endurance, prioritize usable energy at the actual load. Reject a ranking when the normalization or cutoff information is missing rather than filling it with favorable assumptions.
